How to make a favicon people recognise
Use one letter or your symbol
A favicon is drawn 16 pixels wide. A full logo with words turns into a smudge, so use your initial or just your symbol.
Fill the space
Small icons need bold shapes that reach the edges. Make your letter big and heavy, and skip thin lines.
Pick a strong background
A solid colour stands out among the other tabs in both light and dark mode. Transparent icons can vanish on dark tabs.
Match your brand
Use your brand colour and font, so the tab, the Google result and the home screen icon all feel like you.

Questions
What size should a favicon be?
Make it at 48 × 48 px with smaller copies at 32 and 16 px, all packed into favicon.ico. Add a 180 px Apple touch icon for iPhones and 192 and 512 px icons for Android and web apps. This generator makes all of them at once.
Do I still need favicon.ico?
Yes. Browsers still look for /favicon.ico at the root of your site, and Google often uses it in search results. Modern browsers also read the PNG files, so the pack includes both.
How do I add a favicon to my website?
Upload the files in the zip to the top folder of your site, then paste the five lines of HTML shown above inside the head of every page. On Squarespace, Wix, Shopify or WordPress, upload the 512 px PNG in the site icon or favicon setting instead.
Why doesn’t my new favicon show up?
Browsers keep old favicons for a while, so open your site in a private window to check. Google updates the icon in search results when it next crawls your home page, which can take a few days.
