How to pick brand colours that work

  1. Give each colour a job

One primary colour people remember you by, a secondary to support it, and one accent for buttons and highlights. Too many equal colours and nothing stands out.

  2. Use the 60-30-10 rule

About 60% background, 30% primary and text, 10% accent. It’s how most good websites and packaging keep calm but still catch the eye.

  3. Check the contrast

Text needs a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 against its background to be easy to read (WCAG AA). The checks above test every pair for you.

  4. Fit your industry

Warm oranges and yellows feel like food and fun, blues feel trusted and techy, greens feel fresh and natural. Break the rule on purpose, never by accident.

Turn your palette into a whole brand

Zenn draws dozens of logos from your business name, with symbols made by a real design studio, then puts your colours on business cards, social posts and a brand guide.

Questions

How many colours should a brand palette have?

Most brands work best with three to five: one primary colour, a secondary, an accent for buttons and highlights, plus a dark colour for text and a light one for backgrounds. More than that and nothing stands out.

What is the 60-30-10 rule for brand colours?

Use about 60% of a neutral background colour, 30% of your primary and text colours, and 10% of an accent. The accent is what people notice first, so keep it for buttons and the things you want clicked.

What contrast do I need for readable text?

WCAG AA asks for a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 for normal text and 3 to 1 for large text. AAA asks for 7 to 1. This generator checks text, buttons and your primary colour against those levels.

Is this colour palette generator free?

Yes. It’s free with no sign-up and no watermark. Copy the hex codes or CSS variables, download a PNG, or copy a link to share the exact palette.

Which colours suit my industry?

Food brands do well with warm oranges and yellows, tech and finance with blues, health and eco brands with greens, and beauty brands with soft pinks and nudes. Pick an industry mood above to start there.

Can I start from my existing logo colour?

Yes. Type its hex code or pick it under Start from your colour, and the generator builds the other four colours around it. That colour stays locked while you try new ideas.

Can Zenn make a logo in these colours?

Yes. Type your business name at zenn.com and Zenn draws dozens of logos with symbols made by a real design studio, then lets you change every colour. The Brand kit puts them on business cards, social posts and a brand guide.
