Make JD one shape
A monogram works when J and D read as a single mark, not two letters standing next to each other. Let them share a stroke, overlap where their shapes meet, or sit together inside a circle or a square.
Start from J
J’s descending hook feels playful and active. It can become a fish hook, a cane, a musical note or a smile.
Then fit D to it
D pairs a straight stem with a full curve, which feels dependable. The counter makes a natural window, play button or speech bubble.
Keep the weights matched
Both letters should share one typeface and one stroke weight. A thin letter next to a heavy one looks unfinished at small sizes.
